THE UNIVERSITY HILLS ASSOCIATION OF HOMEOWNERS

MONTHLY BOARD MEETING

Tuesday, January 05, 2010

The meeting was called to order by the president, Arnold Martin, at 11:28.

Board members present were: Arnold Martin, Charles Schmidt, Charles Hosler, Esther Nachimson, Garland Sharron, Anna Walther, Barbara Hull, Martin Kahn, Don McGee, Jennifer Davis, Al Taylor and  Committee chairperson, Fred Odell,

Board members not present were: Jim Wells and John De Marco.  Also, not present were chairpersons Pat Andres and Margeaux Black and TLCA representative Katherine Pennington.

Arnold asked that the minutes, posted on the website be approved.  They were approved unanimously,

Treasurer, Charles Hosler, verbally reported a yearly income of $18,500. Bills outstanding and waiting to be received are for curb painting and the electrician for the holiday light display. He reported that the CD at the Bank of the West has been rolled over and has accrued $211 in interest for the year, at 1.15% for 11 months.  Charles recommended part of the $1300 in our checking account be put in another CD to mature at a different time of the year.  Martin suggested the board give Jim latitude in that amount to put in the CD.  Arnold stated that the Bank of the West would give us a short term loan, without interest, if or when we would ever need to access the monies in a CD, short of its maturity.  Chuck asked for the report to be accepted, as stated.  Anna Walther seconded the motion.  The motion passed.

In the absence of Jim Wells, Arnold reported that the Calling Post has been chosen as the way to go for a new calling system.  Residents are asked to be aware that the new system will have an 810 area code and that there will be a "trailer" at the end of the message to utilize the system.  This saves money.

In the absence of Pat Andres, Charles Schmidt reported the Holiday Lighting Award was won by Dr. and Mrs. Wollenman at 608 Balboa. The board agreed that there were so many exceptional yard decorations this year that we would consider expanding the number of awards for 2010.

Charles reported Troop 508 had been selected to repaint the house numbers where needed.  They will do the work when the temperature rises above 55 degrees.  UHAOH was granted $500 from the City of Irving to put toward the Big Flag Caper for the 4th of July.  The grant was smaller than in past years because of the increased number of homeowners’ associations applying for them.  He stated there was no new information about the new sign toppers and when we could expect them to be installed,

Chuck asked Charles about the volunteer program at Farine Elementary School that went south last year.  With the recent change in the administration at the school, we are hopeful there may have a new attitude.  Among other issues concerning Farine was the lack of playground equipment.  Unknown by many board members was no monies are provided in the IISD budget for playground equipment.  Several names were mentioned who are ready and will to become involved.

Garland Sharron, membership chairperson, passed out the papers to be mailed for UHAOH annual membership drive.  Several suggestions were discussed to tweak the responses for full understanding of the importance and privileges of being a member of this organization.  Anna Walther said that she had some new pictures to add to the beautiful, colorful brochure she and her husband Wolfgang produced last year and she felt she could get them ready by mailing time,

Fred Odell asked that we set the date of the Spring Fling.  After a discussion of perhaps changing the event to the fall, Fred motioned the date be Saturday, April 24.  Anna seconded the motion.  The motion passed.  A block party/National Night Out in the fall will be discussed at another time.

Nell Anne Hunt reported that the real estate market seems promising for this year.

Barbara Hull received accolades about the success of the Festival of Lights in December.  It was a huge success.  She asked for an input for next of new and innovative ideas, new talent, etc.

January winners of the Yard of the Month are  Vance Kirksey and Ken Harden at 705 E. Rochelle Boulevard. Board members are asked to meet, immediately following the meeting, for a photo op.

The next meeting of the UHAOH Board of Directors will be at 11:30, February 2, 2010 in the Presidents’ Lounge at the Las Colinas Country Club.  Those wishing to order lunch are asked to come at 11:00.

Don McGee motioned to adjourn the meeting.  Esther seconded the motion.  The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Esther Nachimson
